Hostels aren't abundant in the US as a whole, but you will find decent options in the cities that you'd expect. Yes, it is harder to meet random people in the US, but in this day and age of the internet I feel it's a bit easier than in the past.
I've done it solo a couple times. Boston to the Oregon coast, and just last year, Boston to the Grand Canyon.
You won't find any hostels between Chicago and SD, but there are plenty of campsites and $30 motel rooms. People are amazingly friendly. Very easy to meet random people. I'm still in touch with a few.
It's easy to find places to sleep in your car, but a lot harder to find places to pitch camp on the ground.
Americans are widely prejudiced against cyclists, most people riding motorcycle in the USA are classified as people "just out for a ride", as opposed to using a cycle as a primary means of serious transportation.

Yup - you can find $30-40 motel rooms in the middle of nowhere pretty easily. Just check ahead of time. If the hostel comment wasn't regarding price and was regarding meeting people who are also staying, disregard, but you can do this fairly cheaply if you plan ahead.

I've never heard of them. Give me some examples, and sample rates. Are you talking about the spinoff hotels associated with the big executive chains that can be found in the suburbs of big cities,, like Holiday Inn Express? There is a Wyndham chain called Microtel. I just checked a couple of random rates. Kalamazoo MI, $75, and San Angelo TX a whopping $169 for a single. Most Wyndham Microtels are clustered in states that already have plenty of cheap motels like Alabama and North Carolina.
