Harrison Arkansas has some apartments that start at $370. Harrison is a lovely small town in the Ozarks.

That company, Lindsey Management co., Inc. affordable apartment homes, executive suites, golf courses in Arkansas, Alabama, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Tennessee., has many complexes in smaller towns that are pretty cheap. You might just browse that site and see what you find.

It looks you could also find something in the Northern Panhandle of WV(Wheeling, Weirton, etc) and adjacent areas of Ohio in and around Steubenville, Bellaire, Martins Ferry, etc.

I would look at older industrial or mining towns. One bedroom homes don't get built very often anymore. There are houses people referred to as miner's shacks that are one bed room. Places were men came alone in numbers to work. I would expect one of these houses today would be pretty shabby unless it was maintained by the same family for two or three generations.
