The thing about Florida, though, is there are so many transplants or visitors that it makes you wonder exactly who is committing the crimes. The van lady, for example, who recently drove her kids into the ocean was actually from South Carolina....
where, as far as we know, she never once attempted to drive a mini-van to Spain...in Florida it occurred to her as a good idea to attempt to do so.
well things like Casey Anthony, bath-salts, face-eating, migrants washing ashore, and general violence and pedophilia are a big part of what makes FL "weird"
Yes to general violence, and pedos, don't forget drug trafficking, the highest level of "Pill Mills" corrupt doctors operating these Pill Mills, and probably the highest number of prescription pill addicts in America. Also the general level of horny, middle-aged folks. Florida probably has the highest number of 45yr old and up swingers in any state. I just feel like the suburbs and trailer parks in Florida are filled with the horniest middle-aged folks in the nation. Hornier than teenagers. I feel like 90% of amateur porn on the internet featuring middle-aged folks is filmed in Florida. I feel like any young man(or young Lesbian) with a "mature middle-aged women" fetish could just move to Florida and walk into any suburb or trailer park, and get it on with an older, lonely, middle-aged desperate housewives, or a horny, alcoholic, recent divorcee. I feel like that'd be the easiest thing in the world to do. Despite all of this, I don't think that low of Florida. It's an alright place.
I'm a true crime aficionado (read a ton of true crime books, watch all the shows, etc.) so I feel compelled to comment
Without a doubt, Florida has WAY more weird crimes than any other region.
On the spectrum of weird crimes, my (unofficial, of course) ranking would be:
1. Florida
~huge gap~
2. California
3. Pacific Northwest
4. The rest of the country
Just a teeny, tiny sampling of Florida's criminal weirdness:
-"Ocean Mom," the lady who recently drove her van into the ocean to try and kill her kids
-Tot Mom (Casey Anthony)
-The infamous Lionel Tate case, of a young boy who killed a little girl via a wrestling move
-The murder of "Lobster Boy," a former freak show performer who lived in Gibsonton, a Florida town for old circus folk!
-Carlie Brucia, the young girl kidnapped by a car wash and it was caught on the car wash's surveillance video
-Adam Walsh
-Aileen Wournos
There are many, many more. I highly recommend the book "Sun Struck: 16 Infamous Murders in the Sunshine State." Very interesting!
Although this crime is pretty normal for this dudes profession, but there was a young dude in Lakeland(his name was TJ "Superman" Link) who was allegedly a drug-dealer, well he was murdered. But it wasn't the crime that was weird, it was his memorial service that was weird. His body was put inside a Miami Dolphins painted car, and his body was dressed in a Miami Dolphins orange and teal colored suit, and he had sunglasses on his face. And his body was put in a sitting position in the car for his viewing at his memorial service. Of course, the funeral home staff put a velvet rope around his car, and the viewing took place in what looked like a tent, and there were folks gathered all around taking photos like it was circus, rather than a funeral. This is probably in the top 5 most bizzare out of Florida:
