I-40/I-17 interchanges in Flagstaff, AZ, the I-40 west control sign says Los Angeles. To get to LA, one must link up to I-15 south in Barstow, CA and then I-10 west in San Bernardino.
Here in the Baltimore area, the control city for I-95 north is New York, which is about 200 miles away. (Poor Philadelphia gets shafted, though at least it does appear on the mileage signs.) On I-70 west, the first mileage sign includes Cove Fort, UT, about 2,200 miles away. Cove Fort is listed because it is the western terminus of I-70 -- the counterpart to Baltimore being the eastern terminus. Sadly, this little town does not reciprocate on its signs; the farthest city listed at the beginning of I-70 east is Denver.
In Ocean City, MD, the eastern terminus of U.S. 50, there's a sign listing the distance to Sacramento, CA, the western terminus. I believe that Sacramento reciprocates, though I'm not sure.
One thing that struck me in Salt Lake City is how far away the control cities are: Cheyenne, WY (I-80 east), Reno, NV (I-80 west), and Las Vegas (I-15 south). If memory serves, all of these places are at least 400 miles away. But then again, there isn't a whole lot in-between those places either, so it makes sense.
At one time, a sign on U.S. 98 in Central Florida listed the mileage to West Palm Beach, which is several hundred miles (I think) to the southeast. Don't know if that sign is still there or not.
I-5 doesn't go through any major city north of LA until Sacto. I often wondered why Fresno isn't the control city on the Golden State Fwy (I-5) out of LA. I mean it's a seamless transition to hwy 99 just north of the Grapevine and Fresno is a city of 500K. Just for old time discussion, if any of you ever watch the movie Duel you will see Bakersfield as the control city heading north out of LA on I-5. My guess is at the time of the film being made the entire stretch of I-5 through the San Joaquin Valley wasn't completed??
I have also noticed that if there is a notable city at the extreme end of a CSA then that will be a control city. US 101 has Ventura going North and from San Francisco going south on US 101 it's San Jose. Technically there is no control city listed going north out of San Francisco. The control destination is The Golden Gate Bridge after the I-80 split and Eureka isn't designated the control city until you cross the bridge into Marin County.
Eureka is 200+ miles north of San Francisco and San Jose is 50 miles south of San Francisco. Going east the control city is Oakland (8-10 miles).
In OKC, the farthest is probably Amarillo and the closest is either Lawton or Tulsa. There is signage directing you to Dallas everywhere. We even have an interchange called the Dallas Junction. I guess anybody going through OKC is probably going to Dallas hah.
