Madison, Wisconsin. It's a good city with a lot of people commuting by bike(9th largest biking population in the country!), very laid back, college town so there's always things to do, liberal, many environmental friendly businesses, very safe, very accepting of the gay community, outdoorsy, in between two beautiful lakes, walk able, around 570,000 metro. If you want to experience that big city feel once again you're in between Minneapolis and Chicago and Milwaukee. I highly recommend Madison. We do have cold winters but you get used to it. Good luck in finding a place!
