Instead, Obama got re-elected and gas hit, what, $2.00? Not sure what national average was.
Gas fell well under $2.00 in the very early Obama administration in most States. I don't think Obama had anything to do with it. It was the result of the great recession that started under Bush.

Actually, according to Dept of Energy numbers (https://www.energy.gov/eere/vehicles...rice-1929-2015) national average for gas hasn’t been under $2.00 since the early 2000s. And it isn’t linked to the recession. It climbed after the recession started and peaked around 2012. It was an oversupply issue fueled (no pun intended) according to many by a deliberate effort by oil producing economies to put lower margin oil production (like shale oil) out of business. Was a big problem for the booming economies in places like North Dakota and Canada.

But yeah, it has nothing to do with presidential policy. It was just funny because Gingrich literally stood in front of banners promising something he would never deliver, and within a couple years, people had it anyway.

I recorded 1.60 in Pocatello, Idaho in December 2008. Your figures perhaps are an average over time, but prices were consistently below 2.00 in most States, except for the usual suspects of California, Washington, Hawaii, etc. in the early winter of 2008-2009. Most at the time blamed the great recession for the big dip. You are correct, prices rose steadily after this into 2009-2010, and in fact had regained high marks by 2011-2012.

In my area now that's anywhere between $2.85 - $2.99 per gallon [regular]. We usually try to make it to Sam's Club (saving 20 cents at least on the gallon) or the Costco in Winchester, Va to save even more but we also do other things while down there besides getting gas. Sometimes even savings buying groceries gets me anywhere between .10 - 30 cents off per gallon.

You’re right. I was looking at annual averages, which never fell below $2 nationally. But the monthly national averages, linked above, did drop below $2. But the dip was pretty short lived. Average was over $2 by March ‘09 and over $2.50 by June.

I paid $2.99 at Costco in Issaquah, WA last night. The big name stations like Shell and Chevron are at about $3.55 now, 20 cents more in Seattle.
