I like the Arkansas suggestion upthread.
Arkansas has some beautiful country, and I've heard the duck hunting is great.
Low cost of living in a lot of little towns, and I believe unemployment rate in the Fayetteville area is lower than average right now.
You should take Marat up on his offer and dm him for an insiders POV.

Another suggestion is to look at middle or east TN. Low cost of living in a lot of areas (not as low as AR though), no state income tax, and residency requirements for instate tuition rates are ridiculously easy.

Thomaston, GA
Dothan, AL
Gatlinburg, TN
Gaffney, SC
Cordele, GA
Perry, GA
Barnesville, GA
Banks, AL (Troy)
Enterprise, AL
Aiken, SC
These places may not be in the 2500 pop. range, but they are very beautiful, country towns, that are great for hunting, fishing, and such. The problem for you might be that a couple of them are developing pretty quickly, I'd look into them to see if you like any of them.

You might like the Fort Smith, Arkansas area. Look into one of the towns surrounding like Mountainburg, Alma, Chester, Ozark, etc. All of those places are a lot like what you are looking for.

The witch southern state I would choose is Louisiana because of the voodoo and in True Blood there is a witch and they live in Louisiana.

Some posts above were deleted. It's disappointing that we had so many visits from the spelling police when the OP has requested relocation advice. Griping about a misspelling is NOT the kind of help members should provide in this forum.

Gatlinburg isn't really a country town...it's a giant tourist trap in the mountains.

It would not be among my suggestions for areas for hunting/fishing/outdoor activities for someone to move to. Visit? Sure. The Smokies are beautiful, and it's hard to argue with Gatlinburg's setting. Move? Gatlinburg has the traffic of a town 100x its size, and is stuffed full of tourists 365 days a year.
