most may know and do this but when we moved I numbered the boxes and on a sheet of paper I kept a list of EVERYTHING in each box. Then after all was packed I did a completed list on my computer, made extra copies and gave a couple to the mover. The only thing, other than a number I wrote on a box was Fragile or this end UP.
Once we arrived and began unpacking we referred to the list in order to know what to unpack first, last or whatever. Some boxes are still packed and still taped in my garage because my list kept me informed as to the contents.

Yes, great idea! I've done similarly and you're right, it makes for simple, relaxed, unhurried unpacking.
A faster method is writing general descriptions (desk, or books, or OPEN NOW, or winter clothes) on the outside of the cartons. Doncha love using them thick magic markers?!

Sharpiesare a mover's best friend!

Labelling/numbering the boxes and contents is a wonderful idea. The only reason it wouldn't work so well for me is that I tend to say, "Oh, look! There's space in that box!" and dump into it whatever is in my hands.

I do TRY to be organized when I pack but, well ... I'm just not very good at it.

I did exactly the same thing - except I put a list of contents on each box as well - I also listed on the box the destination of each box, i.e., "Living Room" or "Basement Storage", etc. I did not list on the box anything really valuable like antique silver or jewelry - the only full description of boxes containing valuables was on my personal inventory sheet.

Anyone ever use a Magnum 44 marker?

Just opening it makes for a VERY happy moving day.

Not that I condone the use of inhalants or drugs... Im just saying, it puts sharpies to shame.

I am packing right now for our move from NJ-Tucson AZ...I am really trying to keep organized. We are renting until we find a house. I do not want to unpack everything, so I am using my "sharpie" to mark the contents of my boxes. Ok break over back to packing!!!

Remember to write the destination of each box on the outside of the box - If you put LR on the boxes going to the living room, etc....it will make it a lot easier.

Yep, that's what I did when we recently moved. Oh well. I found what I was looking for eventually.
