Why are general labor rates for local moving so expensive? I went on a moving website where a user can enter a zip code and date/time to receive a quote for moving with no truck. I was shocked to see upwards of $150 for 2 hours and 2 movers. This is for general labor help moving furniture from room to room and from room to garage. What is it about moving and even labor help in moving that makes it so expensive compared to other forms of general labor, such as ditch digging, removing weeds, etc..?
If I were to ask the staff at a local church for parishioners that would be interested in moving items from room to room and from room to garage about 100 feet away, what would be a fair rate to pay them?
Why are any legitimate companies prices high? How about all of the payroll taxes, insurance, transportation vehicle with associated costs, etc! This is why illegals who do not abide by the necessary legal costs of doing business are always in high demand! With all that’s going on politically in this country it’s only getting worse, not better!

You are still complaining about labor rates?
Labor has to be vetted, hired, insured, bonded and hired out. It is called overhead. I was not aware that churches are handling day labor. Best case scenario - all is well. Worst case scenario - you are dealing with a law suit. Why does your son not get a buddy and move your stuff around? No neighbors who will give a hand?

Don't forget to check your homeowner's policy for liability coverage. How much cash to hand over on the day might be the least of your worries!

I think they should be charitable to their neighbor (i.e., you) and do it for free.

Dunno. You would have to ask them.
Frankly, if I were to move your furniture around I'd want $37.50 per hour. Try moving your furniture yourself and you'll understand why those guys want $150 for 2 hours for 2 men.

I don't see it as any different than moving pavers or bricks from a front driveway to a backyard or transporting a 15 ton pile of rocks from a driveway to a backyard. I consider those $15/hr manual labor jobs.

What you consider it and what the market pays may not be a match.
