Would anyone who has done extensive research into birth records verify, or not, that for the most part old birth records are not individual birth certificates but rather entries in volumes of birth logs entered into some sort of book or registry.
In most rural areas the births and deaths were entered into the family bible until a particular state started issuing Birth Certificates, and even then it took a while for the delivering doctor to start reporting births, or issuing a death report. Later, after Birth Certificates became a requirement for some things, many of us had to apply for and receive a Delayed Birth Certificate. Those are on file with the regular Birth Certificates. So, I guess a lot depends on what state and what time frame you are interested in.
