I tend to have the best luck w/peonies with my clematis. A lot of people dig too deep to plant their annuals which messes w/the clematis roots. They don't like that.

Daylilies slowly spread & in 4 or 5 years you'll have to dig up the clump to divide it. That REALLY messes w/the clematis roots, too and may kill the plant. That's why I like peonies...they can stay in the same spot pretty much forever.

Nice topic,

For mine, which is "The President"..and is planted in i a raised bed which faces east, there is a 3" layer of medium bark mulch, a Gardenia close by and a large variegated leaved geranium planted about 3 or 4 feet away from the Clematis..which i may take out..not a huge geranium fan..may put a miniature rose in it's place..the one in this bed right now is thriving below a larger tea rose

Last year, when i diddn't have the mulch down when i installed the plant, it grew but showed signs of heat stress..Since the mulch went in, as the Clematis was emerging from dormancy back in march, its taken off..and provided quite a show..Outstanding Vines gallery.JPG Outstanding Vines gallery (2).JPG

The next Clematis going in is a solid white flowered hybrid..can't remember it's name off hand..lol

Don't forget the letter carrier.... he/she won't want anything tall enough to attract insects that might sting. Hubby can tell you from exp....the mail won't get put into the box if that happens.

Not my experience at all. I planted the daylillies to the front of the clematis so they are not entwined and have only split the "stellas" once with no problams. They were a wise choice as they keep the clematis'feet out of the sun, and I have lovely long lasting lillies thru much of the summer into fall. peonies are pretty for 2 weeks, drop the petals and a blah bush remains.
