i bought a chinese fan palm today at walmart, i live in louisville, kentucky (zone 7a or 7b) and i planted it in the ground. do you think i need to over-winter it inside or can it survive outside with some sort of cover? there are only little sprouts about 4 or 5 feet tall with no real trunks yet.

Its not as cold hardy as you would want. As nitram points out, its more appropriate for Zone 9. I would take it inside. Indeed I would keep it potted all the time. But if you must keep it outside, massive protection is the order.

Find another palm that can tolerate Zone 7. There are several.

yeah ive looked for more hardy palms but theyre hard to find around here. im not really opposed to bringing it indoors, it would just be easier to leave it outside.

There is 'Chinese Fan Palm' -two types.

The first type is the 'Chinese Windmill Palm' 'Trachycarpus' several variations--all from Asia- -Trachycarpus Fortunei (Several subtypes more hardy then others) will survive with some kind of winter protection in northern KY.

The second type is another species altogether- The 'Chinese Fountain Fan Palm' or Livistona Chinensis- less hardy then the species above- and is suitable only as a deck plant in the summer to be over wintered inside- since it is hardy only in California and central to south Florida and the gulf coast.

I am very familiar with Jungle Music- as a 'palm nut' from a way back Bergman has a wonderful nursery- he does have a high minimum purchase order however of I believe $250.

I grow trachycarpus fortunei and Wagnerianus here in Connecticut a zone 6/7- more zone 7 in recent years- I do cover in the winter. Both are thriving-
