I bought a couple of flats of sweet potato slips, and grew my own last year. Doug 'em in early October, donated 80 pounds to local foodbank, shared with friends and family and ate them weekly all winter. I'm one proud gardener, but more to the point.
We still have some in the garage and they are starting to put out shoots. Can I cut those out, plant them like seeds and get my own slips for this year? Can I grow a crop from them?
Did I mention that I make a mean sweet potato chili?
Yes, yes you can. It would be better to "bed" them first. I'm going to do that later today. I have some horse manure in a cinder block box I made, bury the potatoes almost completely, then cover with soil and cover the whole thing with some plexiglass to help retain heat. Some pople just loosen the soil and place the potatoes in there and that works too.

Sweet potato chili? That sounds really good. I've not tried planting sweet potatoes or any other potato. Are they difficult? Must they be planted in mounds?
Busy the next couple of days, but I'll post the recipe in a separate thread after that.
I planted the slips in a mounded row, then had to keep (every couple of days) putting the vines back on top of the rows, as they tend to "spread out" otherwise. I found it to be an easy crop to grow, but sweet potato vine is an aggressive sucker. No pun intended. Ciao!
