Just gave it a quick haircut before having to stop...too damn hot today - my face is speckled with red and white and I'm on my second Gatorade after much water.

I still have to rake all that stuff up...tomorrow.

I would add in some chartruese and some silver - this will play well against the red-burgundy and make it really pop.

If these plants are doing well in their location and are drought tolerant, I'd be cautious about yanking them up.

Try trimming and clearing out any weeds or strays and see what you've got. Then look to some of the silver and chartruese plants.

That's the thing - what I have here WORKS, and that's difficult for my area (Jupiter inland) - especially without a sprinkler system in the middle of a drought...I have a timer set up to a rigged system so they get some water, but not much. They have to be able to tough it out, although we plan to put a sprinkler in when we fix the house (and resod) to sell some time this year or next.

I had also entertained the idea, ala every gardening magazine I've ever read, of introducing some other tall but limited architectural or decorative elements, but because this is so close to the sidewalk on a very heavily used street, I fear anything really neat will get swiped in the middle of the night...the concrete benches are there because that would be quite an effort for a punk to to remove them.

There's a trellis obelisk at Lowe's right now - it's TALL - it's wooden and it comes in a rusty red or a mellow green. I think it's $60? Anyway, I've been eyeing it for a while.....maybe it would work for you? You'd have to do some clearing of course, but maybe one of your vines would like it? You could secure it to the ground, but once the vines are growing on it, I doubt anyone would walk away with it (it's a pretty imposing size).

I like the idea you mocked up above. Having a small path to walk into the garden would be nice (and help with maintenance)....maybe a low focal point at the "end" of the path? A large, low pot with some short plants (something horizontal...succulents?)?
