...in Lake Linganore in New Market and is in ICU at hospital. The woman who told us said she has seen a couple copperheads this year already but first I’ve heard of rattlesnakes around this area.

Unusual but in the historical range.

Maryland Snakes (Order Squamata)

Bears get hit on the Baltimore Beltway fairly regularly and one was hit in St. Mary's a couple years ago. One, at least, has been spotted on the Shore as well as Gaithersburg recently.

The tangent to bears was an example of how some species are returning, I can see rattlers doing the same.

Copperheads and Rattlesnakes are pit vipers, they eat rodents. If humans don't actively kill them on sight, they will return to areaa of the state that have mice and a place to den up in the winter. The idea they are limited to talus and rocky areas is mostly because it gives them cover from people.

Sorry somebody got bit. Always seek medical treatment.

I just realized that the only place I have ever seen a living rattlesnake was in the Catoctin Mtns. in Frederick County. It was a thick snake, no doubt what it was, sunning itself on a rocky ledge. I have seen plenty of dead Copperheads in Allegany County (never a live one, though,) including places in the city of Cumberland. They are pretty common, and often go unnoticed.
