How bad/nice is the rush hour commute towards Fort Detrick in Frederick? I hope it's likely a heck of alot better than the other direction towards D.C. but have little idea for comparison. I would say probably from Germantown/Gaithersburg (Ext 9 at most) up I-270 and into the base. For right now, my daily commute takes about 45 minutes from Great Seneca and Clopper to Montrose and Executive (total of about 15 miles one way). How will this commute compare to one into Fort Detrick? Many thanks in advanced.

Coming north on 270 you'll be driving against traffic. On a normal day you'll be in Frederick in 20 min tops from G-town. Depending on how long the line is at the base gate, maybe another 10 min.

That shouldn't be a problem. Plus I believe Ft. Detrick is right off the main road through Frederick, Rt. 15.

Phychofan, as the other posters said - not that bad.

But there will be an unavoidable slowdown just outside the Detrick gates, due to the large number of employees arriving at work. Those backups will extend up 7th Street to Rt. 15, or down Military Rd. to Rosemont.

Thanks Tim. I'm not too concerned about the gate wait because I used to commute from downtown Baltimore city to work at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford County and the gate there weren't too bad at all (I usually reached the gate at 8:30-9am). It was going against traffic on I-95 the whole way and it was GREAT! From what everyone has said, I-270 may work out the same way, which would be awesome.
