My husband is just out of the airforce and has several job offers. One is in Frederick, MD. Any advice We are not familiar with the area at all. We love outdoor activities, hunting, fishing, camping, etc. Children at home are 9 and 7. Other offers are in South Dakota, Nebraska, possibly Colorado. I would love to hear what others have to say about the area. Housing range for us would be 200-300K.

You would probably be looking at a townhouse in that price range in Frederick. There is hunting and fishing in Frederick Co. It is certainly a higher cost area than SD or Ne. Depends on where in CO.

There are areas within the city bounderies of Frederick where you can find nice, older homes for just under 300k. Cape cod or ranch/rambler style, often solid brick & wood floors. Many people want newer homes, but these older gems are my personal favorites. Although I now live in NM, I would not hesitate to move back to Frederick, and had only good experiences while there.

Frederick is very quaint. It's a small/mid-sized town with a really cute downtown area, lots of restaurants & shops. Culturally it's become part of the greater Balt-Wash metro area, but it still has a slower pace and hasn't forgotten its roots. I think it is a good place to raise children.

Hunting, fishing or camping would be up the road in PA, or west into Western MD or WVa.

Have the prices fallen that much? You might be able to find something, but average prices for a family size house are nearer 400-500 and up. I absolutely agree with the center paragraph.

There's the Monocasy river that goes right thru town and the Potomac within 10-15 miles that people fish all the time. Gambril Park, the Frederick Mtn Park, and Cactoctin Mtn parks plus the C&O Canal are all within 15-30 minutes of Frederick and offer camping and hiking. All the forested areas can be hunted in season so you don't have to go to PA or WV, tho they are near.

I guess it depends on what type of construction we're talking about...family-sized newer houses, or the bigger, historic homes will be more in the price range you mentioned. But there are still pockets of affordability sandwiched betw Detrick and Rt.15 - typically 3BR/1.5BA older homes.

I live in Frederick. Houses are definitley pricey. You should be able to get an OK sized townhouse in 200-300 K range. I'm an avid fisherman, and I will say there is plenty of places to fish around here. The Monocacy River and Potomac River are both in and around town and offer good fishing. There's plenty of ponds around here, and lakes as well. If you don't mind the drive, Deep Creek Lake is a crowded but nice summer getaway with fishin, camping and hiking. Plenty of places to camp, google the Maryland DNR and you can find state parks. Lots of deer hunting around here a well. Frederick also has good schools and low crime. Message me if you need more info.

I would think that you can get a decent house in that price range, although prices do go up from there especially in the pricer neighborhoods. My ex and I moved to Frederick after college to raise a family and it is certainly a good place to do that. The schools are relatively good and there is plenty for kids to do. There are parks all around and I especially love biking in the battlefields, either Gettysburg or Antietam. There is lots of hunting, fishing and camping without leaving Frederick County. There are a couple ski resorts just outside the County, if you are into that. The downtown is historic and charming with lots of little shops and restaurants. There's a neat single A minor league baseball team in town too. It's great family fun. Even though it is a generally rural setting, you still have easy access to Baltimore and Washington too. Sounds like you have some choices, and that's a good thing. Although I live here, I've done a lot of traveling and Frederick should be high on your list.
