Are you looking to rent or buy?

According to bankrate.com to keep your standard of living you would need to make $57K in Montgomery County (Germantown).

50K won't get you much in Germantown, so you may have to look west. Frederick (or Urbana, MD) is your best bet as there are many affordable town homes you can rent around here, with very easy access to I270 South (which is what you take from Frederick to Germantown). Rush hour traffic in the morning may mean it'll take anywhere from 30-50 minutes depending on when you leave in the morning, and where in Germantown you are going.

Wikipedia can help give you and overview. It'll tell you the median income in each county. Just type in Montgomery County for Germantown and Frederick County for Frederick or Urbana.

Also, check out GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community if you plan on staying here as you will have little ones entering into school in a few years!

I would highly suggest Frederick, or even Thurmount or Brunswick. 50k is hard in Germantown, not impossible, but difficult.

So, Did you take the job? I know enough about Raleigh to see some similarities, but being on the fringe of the huge DC metro area, you may find Germantown very different. Please post your findings if you did take the job

Frederick is cheaper, nicer people and less crime.
