So, I guess the other thing I forgot to mention is that ideally I want to be about 20 minutes away from work (I'm so tired of my 45-90 minute commute each way). So being right next to TCU isn't a requirement, but would be nice :-)

We've also started looking a bit at apartments. They are not ideal (due to our dog, who sometimes likes to howl during the day), but if it's all we can do, then we will.

One of my absolute FAVORITE areas is in Arlington Heights, near I-30 and Hulen. It is a quaint area of cottage homes near great shopping and w/i 20 minutes of TCU. Zip code 76107

Thank you squirl...the zip codes are very helpful!

I was seeing in another thread that people have said to stay away from south of I30. Is there a reason why? We saw a couple of apartment buildings that were just south.

If you want to live in Benbrook, I've seen several listings on Craigslist over the past few days for this area. (Look at the Fort Worth tab, not Dallas) I can't remember if they are in your pricepoint or not though. I was searching $1000-$1500.

The north side of I-30 is more homes than apartments, but I don't know of a serious reason to avoid the south side if clustered near Hulen and I-30. You can always get crime maps by googling to see if the concerns are valid.

How far of a drive would Benbrook be to TCU?

15-20 min. max. And a very easy commute.
And I agree w/ Squirl about 76107/Arlington Heights. Just a bit farther west is 76116, the Ridglea area, also very nice and desirable.

Again, I would encourage you to look east, in the Ryan Place neighborhood for some wonderful values. That's 76110.

This is my neck of the woods, so please forgive a correction. The linked house is in Como, which is a very different neighborhood than Arlington Heights. Como is low income and high crime - there was a rash of shootings a couple years ago that scared me off even going to the restaurants there for a time (Drew's Place is just too good to stay away from for long). Arlington Heights is north of 30, east of Camp Bowie, and west of Montgomery. I live in Ridglea North, which the south of 30 and west of Camp Bowie. Both neighborhoods are great, but they do have a moderate amount of burglaries and car break-ins. You just need to be smart - don't leave things in your car and light up your house like Vegas!

For an easy commute to tcu I highly recommend Arlington Heights or West Byers which is a little nicer. The drive to tcu is about 10 mins and you are also the same distance to the West 7th district and even closer to the museums. There is an non mls listed rental on El Campo north of Camp Bowie. I believe the price on the sheet is $1500. Arlington Heights and West Byers are probably my favorite areas in the heart of Ft Worth. One more thing, the area north of Camp Bowie is generally nicer and preferred to the area south.

that house on Curzon is described as Arlington Heights ont he MLS info and is only a block or so away from the Central Market shopping center--I don't know if that is far enough west to be part of Como
that is why it is important to get local RE agent who knows the area well and knows the subtle differences between sections

there are some areas in FTW (and other towns) I would not really want to even drive through if I did not have to
