So we are continuing our search for a home and are considering new construction. Just getting started with our research, but so far, we are considering the following:

DR Horton
Lennar
Meritage
Gehan
Holiday Homes

Not sure if there are other builders in that area in our price range. Just wondering if anyone here has had any good/bad experiences with the above builders. Any comments are appreciated.

If you have a consumer complaint (i.e., problems with one of these builders) tell the OP in a DM. Consumer complaints are not allowed on City-Data and will be deleted.

Are you serious? There are dozens of threads on the Dallas board slamming builders all the time.

To the OP:
Horizon homes as well as Cheldan Homes would fall in the price range of these builders too.

If you have a buyer's agent represent you, they can share with you more about positives and negatives of each builder too.

As mentioned above I would choose Horizon Homes before any others you've listed. Another builder who is doing good work is American Legend Homes.

Some of the builders you mention are big national who build mass production homes and save a buck where ever possible and although not bad usually rank in the middle of anyones quality list.

What I would prefer is a good local / regional builder. Another one is Drees Homes but they may be a little higher then you want to pay.

The 3 builders I mention all have good websites you can checkout for pricing & locations.

Additional note: I've also had good luck with First Texas Homes. I currently have a client building one in far North FTW and they are getting a lot for their money. I've sold about 5 of their homes in the last 3-4 years and all have turned all well with few problems.

Good to know. We did also look at First Texas Homes, but it was getting late and we were hungry/tired, so we didn't look for long. Will definitely give it another look as they are building in the Woodland Springs development which is our top choice as far as areas go.

you can run a search for Woodland Springs on FTW board and get ton of hits
be patient--read through them--some of them are not necessarily ALL about Woodland Springs--it just comes up in the conversation but there is good info there--
and lot that is very current

I am serious. Please report consumer complaints. They present a liability issue for C-D.

IF there were no posts with personal opinions about certain businesses
probably 20% of the threads would be deleted...
most people aren't going to take the time to send PMs

could you please POST the section of the rules/regs that states no consumer complaints should be posted...

So we looked again yesterday and as of right now, we have narrowed it down to Lennar, Gehan, and First Texas Homes. Gehan is probably leading right now because they have 4 lots left on a cul de sac street the rest of the homes are already built and look very nice and it is on bit of a hill so you get a good view from both the front and back yard, you can actually see over the backyard neighbors home and see across the horizon. FTH is a very close second. Biggest problem is lack of storage space and no areas for a coat closet or coat rack in the entry way. Seems like a minor thing to some, but just seems like such a major oversight to not have a coat closet at least somewhere near the front door, or a wall that would be good for putting a coat rack. Neighborhoods they are in are also mostly built out, which means quieter and more complete looking. Lennar has a floorplan we absolutely love, large lip area in the garage for extra storage, and quiet honestly the most relaxed, knowledgeable, and friendly sales rep by far. Biggest downfall, just starting construction on many streets that they have lots on, so lots of construction trucks, workers and noise for the next 1-3 years. Also, not much selection available on backsplash tile, floor tile, and cabinet colors.

Looked at Cheldan, did not like at all. Meritage and DR Horton, not crazy about location. Didn't look at Holiday, not sure if we will.

Overall, a lot more info now than we knew 1 week ago.

"This is not the right place for consumer complaints. Such posts present defamation issues and they don't give the other side the opportunity to present their side of the argument. "

From the FAQ.
