You can take a Yellowcab From Pompano to Fort Lauderdale. The fares are not bad if you do the trip once or twice. But if you plan on exploring greater areas such as Sawgrass Mills, Miami, Palm Beach, etc. then I recommend you rent a car because cab rides start adding up quickly. Public transportation is an oxymoron in Broward County.

My in-laws have a car so I guess the best way is to drive. I have heard that public transportation is a joke there. Isn't fort Lauderdale only 15 minutes away from Pompano Beach?

Yes, and probably even shorter than that.

Pompano is actually bordering Fort Lauderdale. Downtown is only like 2 miles from Pompano, but there are 100 stoplights. So it takes more like 20 minutes. Like I said, the OP can take a Yellow Cab for a modest price. This is not NYC. We do not have a metro-system here.

I doubt it. If they do, they are expensive and take 2 hours to get back and forth. The main water taxi i know of only goes from downtown up to Oakland Park Blvd in Fort Lauderdale. It does not go up to Pompano. But with the prices, you'd be better off renting a car.

Honestly, you will be much better off if you just rent a cheap econo car for a couple of days during your trip.
