Hi there! I am from Seattle, WA (obviously since the username imply so), and am very interested in attending Nova next fall. I've done a lot of research so far, but still can't really find the right answers. So is there a community of Christians there or anywhere in Ft. Lauderdale that I can get connected with? What are the students like there? What kinds of things should I expect? What is the city and people of Davie like? Is there public transportation there? As you know, the north is cold! So I wanna finish getting my Bachelor's somewhere warm and exciting! =) By the way, if there are any other recommended schools in South Florida, please let me know. Thanks!

I have friends who attended Nova grad school (law/med), but nobody who attended undergrad there. I can tell you that it is a very nice campus since I've been there several times. Everything is very new and well-kept. The school is medium-sized, but the undergrad program is very small so far as I know. The grad programs make up the bulk of the student body. I'm not sure if they have dorms on campus or not. There are lots of off-campus apartment communities nearby that you can walk to classes from. There is also a Publix grocery store, a CVS pharmacy, a Walgreens, and several restaurants right next to campus. There are a few places/bars to go out to nearby.

Not sure about the Public Transportation on-campus, but the public transportation in general in Broward County is lacking. There are buses you can take places around Broward County such as shopping malls and the beaches. But if you own a car, I would recommend you bring it here.

The town of Davie surrounding the campus is a nice, quiet suburb. There isn't a whole lot else in Davie other than gated housing communities and off-campus apartments. It is located only a few miles southwest of the city of Fort Lauderdale. The beaches are only a 15 minute drive from the Nova campus. The nearest shopping mall is the Broward Mall which is only a mile or two away from Nova in the nearby town of Plantation. Also, the largest shopping mall in FL (Sawgrass Mills) is about 10-15 minutes away in Sunrise. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is just east of Davie in Hollywood. And you are about a 35 minutes drive from South Beach and Miami.

The student body is going to be a mixed bag like most any university but you'll notice that nice South Florida charm *sarcasm* while you're here. I use to hear it all the time from northerners in particular about how rude and unfriendly people can be down here. The public transportation system isn't too good down here but if you had to take it, it can get you to where you gotta go but its going to take longer compared to a major city since buses dont come as frequent and everything down here is so spread out. They have undergrad and graduate dorms there and an on campus shuttle that will also take you to a few places like the mall and I believe a shopping center with a Publix(I think). Nova has a tendency of being a bit unprofessional in some instances but when you pay people as little as they do I think its to be expected. I think you'll soon be acquainted with the infamous phrase of "That's Nova". If you do come, one of your first goals should be to get a job so you can get tuition reimbursement.

What are you studying exactly?

Thank you both for your replies. I am planning on studying either business or communication. I guess I should probably toughen up before going to Florida for school as well as somehow make some friends! I hardly know anyone down there, but I love it, especially the sunshine & palm trees! I just ignore the things people complain about up here in the north so I don't get discouraged. =) If there is anything else people would like to recommend, even schools for me to consider in South Florida, please let me know. Again, thank you!

Come on, its not that bad here, lol. S. FL is not as rude as the Northeast. It is mixed here. There are people from all over. The rude people are mainly older people from the Northeast. Moderator cut: rude

Did you check into FAU (Florida Atlantic University)? It is a bigger school located in Boca Raton, which is a nice suburb about 20 minutes from Fort Lauderdale. It is a public school, so the tuition would be less expensive.

I actually have checked out FAU and a few other public schools in South Florida, but the student body is just way too big and its harder to get into the business programs in a public school, or at least some. I find it better to go to a private school if its out of state because there is more funding. If I was to go to an out of state public school, I would havee to pay the out of state tuition as well as not receive any state grants (since I will not be a resident of Florida). Thanks a lot for the recommendation though. Hopefully Nova is the right fit for me or else I'll just keep on transfering, which is the last thing I want to do!

All I can say is that you are getting a truckload of negative advice. My husband and I both graduated from NSU. If you really want to find out about the university, there have been scores of posts on this forum about NSU, housing , etc. all you have to do is perform a search and you will find far more information than you can imagine.

I went to the law school at Nova and was very happy with my experience. I think the first response to your question was on target. The school seems to have more well-developed grad programs than undergrad. They do have on-campus housing and the campus is quite nice. Beautiful, large library, dining hall is sufficient, bookstore, etc. is convenient. However, in terms of job opportunities, I do think it is a more well-regarded school locally than nationally, so I wouldn't advise coming to the school for an education if you do not plan to settle in the area. I found that the local law firms (even large national firms with local offices) willingly considered and hired top graduates of Nova's law school, but lawyers (and people in general) that I've dealt with outside of the So. Florida area had not heard of the school. Something to think about, depending on what your next steps are after obtaining your degree.

Also, there are many Christian churches in South Florida, for example, Calvary Chapel is huge and has several locations not too far away. Good luck to you!

Hi there! Thanks for the warning! Would you happen to know what their undergraduate business program is like? Also, I am planning on getting my master's after receiving my bachelor's degree, is Nova reputable enough for me to be able to get into a really good graduate school after graduating from there? What other schools would you suggest for me to look into in South Florida? I like it there a lot! Just haven't been through a hurricane yet! Anymore information about Nova would be appreciated, if not that is okay too! Again, thanks!

Not sure if anyone replied to this but I will tell you the business program is pretty good at the undergrad level. The business school is really good at the grad level. They are regionally accredited and on the way to become AACSB accredited nationally. As far as other business schools in South Florida, University of Miami is the most competitive as well as Expensive! There's also FAU and FIU which are public schools. I think both of them also have a good business program. So it all depends on what you want do to and what your requirement are.
