My boyfriend and I have the option of moving down to the Fort Lauderdale area (from Boston). He will be working in Sunrise and I am wondering what life is like for people in their mid-twenties to mid-thirties. Are there nice places to rent with good pools and access to the beach? What's a good area to live if I like being within walking distance of shops and cafes? Thanks for any info!

I don't live in Sunrise but I shop there quite a bit. I usually only go on the main drag for shopping which would be Sunrise Blvd. I have not seen any areas that you would live and be able to walk to shops and cafe's. If you are looking that, check out Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Your boyfriend would have to commute but he would be going against the traffic. I don't think it would be too bad.
Weston also has an area that has some boutique shops and restaurants. It is called Weston Town Center. Weston has all types of housing from Apartments, right acrosss the street from the Town Center, to million dollar homes. Weston is about a 10 minute drive south of the shopping area of Sunrise.
At some point someone else will chime in and tell you about other areas that I am not aware of.
Good luck.

You can rent a condo in Artesia in Sunrise which is w/in walking distance to the Sawgrass Mills Mall (lots of shopping) and there are a lot of restaurants w/in the mall and in the Oasis area and the newer Collonades area. Artesia is resort-style living with an amazing clubhouse and pool area. Minto Communities Inc. Florida a leading builder and developer offering a wide selection of new homes sales, high-rise condominiums sales. The owners who bought the condos for an investment are hurting so I you could probably get a great deal in there now. We lived there for a year while our new house was being built. I wouldn't want to buy one, but for a young couple to rent, it would be ideal. Except ......it is close to your boyfriend's work, but not near the beach. Check out the lagoon style pool though - gorgeous!

Kristina,

You don't have to live in Sunrise either. You can live in Fort Lauderdale, or any of the surrounding suburbs in Broward County and they are easily commutable to Sunrise. The younger crowd of people in their 20's and 30's tend to live closer to the nightlife areas. Most of the nightlife is further east near downtown Fort Lauderdale and near the beaches. Also, Plantation is a great area for younger couples to live. It is near Sunrise but is also only 20 minutes from the beach. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants in Plantation including the Broward Mall. And the Sawgrass Mills mall is in SUnrise only minutes away.
