Pompano, Lighthouse Point, Deerfield, Parkland, Coconut Creek, Parkland and Coral Springs are all really nice places to live. There are some sketchy areas near Dixie Highway in Pompano, but overall, North Broward is a nice, down-to-Earth place to live.

No wonder you hate it here. Look somewhere else. If you budget is low (under 250k) look at North Lauderdale, if it's moderate (250-500) look at Coral Springs or Coconut Creek, if it's high look at Parkland or east of Dixie Hwy in Ft. Lauderdale.

Good guidance from Kevin and Compelled ... I'll add a plug for my neck of the woods, the Imperial Point and Coral Ridge Isles communities in far northern Fort Lauderdale. A typical 3/2 with a pool can be had in those areas for about $350,000 or maybe even a bit less these days. The homes are older (mostly built in the late '50s and '60s), but well-built -- a key in this hurricane-prone area.
