Based on your strong emphasis on schools, I'd concur Fort Collins beats Loveland hands-down. From everything I've heard, there are great schools to choose from with different programs (school choice is the norm in Colorado). I don't have kids and so can't comment on particular schools, but my wife did volunteer in a couple and was impressed. Loveland is quieter, a nice enough town, and schools don't have violence or anything, but I found going from Ft. Collins to Loveland like travelling back in time 30 years.

A lot of families live in the Old Town area too, the college students are not rowdy or out of control like in Boulder and the downtown, City Park, the Lincoln Center and the Poudre River trail are all great for families.

My husband and I are planning a move to Ft. Collins, Co. We have 3 daughters. He has visited the area 3 times work related vistis and fell in love with the area. We would like more information on which areas are best to rent in, close to shopping, entertainment and schools all within a bike or walking distances. We are tired of living in a city that you can't walk, bike, or enjoy the outdoors.

The whole town is pretty bikeable and walkable. If you have a look at the Fort Collins Bike Map, it will give you an idea of where the off-street bike paths and the on-street bike routes are located.

Schools are well distributed throughout the city. If your child lives over a certain distance (1.5miles?) from a school, they will be on a bus. Otherwise the child should be close enough to walk. Maps of school locations and boundaries can be found at the Poudre Schools website.

Shopping and entertainment are going to be concentrated along College Avenue from the Poudre River on the north to around Harmony on the south, and along Harmony from College to Zeigler.

Good luck!

There is not a hospital tied to Colorado State University here in town, but University of Colorado Health has combined with Poudre Valley Health Systems, so the Poudre Hospital on Lemay in Fort Collins is now under that umbrella.

In Loveland, just off I-25, University Health Systems has a regional hospital and trauma center called Medical Center of the Rockies. Loveland's other hospital, McKee Medical Center, is located nearer to the center of Loveland and is part of the Banner Health Systems.

The University of Northern Colorado has a pretty good nursing school, so I would imagine that they work closely with the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, which is also a Banner Health Systems facility.
