We are moving to CO next summer. Very possibly LOVELAND. We haven't figured out just where we'll live, but I am hoping someone can answer this question re: G/T and school protocol.

We have a child who'll be in eighth grade. She is currently in a gifted/talented program (public school in Texas) and has been since second grade.

Having been accepted/identified out of district/state, might she automatically be included? It looks like the area we're considering is Thompson school district.

I'm hoping she doesn't have to go through another battery of testing; but perhaps that's more wishful thinking on my part.

Thanks for your time.

Fraser

We live in Loveland and are part of the R2J school district. I hope to give you some insights.

First the good news. If she's been identified as a GT student, she will likely be identified here as well.

Now the bad news. Don't get your hopes up to high for a GT program (although the district website and talking points say they have a great GT program). (The GT programs start to wind down in Middle School) The best we were able to do was to have our daughter go to Lucile Erwin Middle School for the MYP (Middle Years Program) International Baccalaureate (IB) program. There were a couple of after school programs (reading club and forencis) that she took the inititive to participate in to keep her going, but nothing the school district really did. And for GT they did an ALP (Advanced Learning Plan) that basically is what you as the parent will promote in line with school stuff for the benefit of your daughter. But, you likely already to stuff to keep her motiviated.

If you daughter is gifted in a certain area, you can contact the district GT person as well as the individual schools to see what program will match her needs. Generally, we are a school of choice, which means you typically can go to the school you want. And being a GT student, they usally will let you go where you want.

Hope that helps.
