Hi, My husband retired last year after 24 years active duty in the Air Force. He is currently enrolled in an Mechanical Engineering degree program in Utah. This was our last base and now we are ready to move! We've always considered Colorado, so we are looking for a college with a good engineering program to finish up his last two years. We're also curious about the job outlook for mechanical engineers in the Boulder/Denver/Fort Collins area.

Our daughter will be entering second grade when we make this move, so we need to live in a safe neighborhood with a great elementary school, within reasonable commuting distance to whatever college my husband attends. We are hoping to spend under $1100 on rent.

I know this is a broad question, but we need a starting point. We are open to Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins areas. Thanks!

Colorado State University in Fort Collins and Colorado School of Mines in Golden both have good engineering schools. Northern Colorado has some good job potential for those with the right education in the upcoming years, with the Aerospace and Clean Energy technology park coming to Loveland and all of the oil and gas development near Greeley.

Schools in Fort Collins and Loveland usually rate pretty high for your 2nd grader. GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community

If you choose CSU, keep in mind that living too near the campus in Fort Collins might put you in a neighborhood with a lot of undergraduates, and the associated issues. The whole town is pretty easy to commute, though.
