Hello. I have a 2001 Excursion with the electronic shift on the fly. My hobs are stuck and I have decided to buy an after market set of manual hubs made by Warn. I do all of my repairs myself and actually do a lot of side work on vehicles out of my home so although I have never had to work on hubs on these trucks yet, I am not worried about doing this job at all.

My question is this:
Does anyone know if any sort of conversion kit is needed to change the stock hubs to after market hubs or can I just buy the hubs and put them in?

I have read a number of different things about this and have read some that say you need a conversion kit and others that say you do not. I called two parts suppliers near me and one told me I need a conversion kit and one said I did not. The one that said I need it also told me he has the hubs in stock but does not carry the conversion kit which I found strange. I would just like to know if some sort of conversion kit is needed before I start doing this so that I do not find out while everything is apart and then have no way of getting anywhere to buy a conversion kit.

After some research I have answered my own question. There is no conversion kit needed for my hubs. My hubs are automatic and manual and the conversion kit is on for the automatic only shift on the fly hubs. I was going to change them today but it is currently 19 degrees with wind gusts of 50 mph so I will wait another day or two.

Solid front axle with leaf springs. I have not had a problem with the 4 wheel drive engaging until now which is surprising since I have read that it is a common problem and many people switch over to just manual locking hubs by after market companies. I do not care about climbing out to lock and unlock them. Ford suggests getting out to lock them when the temperature goes below freezing anyway.

I had a truck that the hubs would get stuck on. I found backing up a few feet before I disengaged them helped a lot. I traded them out later for new hubs but still had the same problem. A mechanic told me how the front end has a slightly faster set of gears to keep the truck from swapping ends. This was very slight as the rear was a 4.10 rear end and the front was 4.09 but they get bunched up.

My current truck has the same ratio front and rear.

weird when I swaped gears in my truck I did the opposite and went with 4.10 in the rear and 4.11 up front that way the rear which is alot stronger does a bit more of the work

yeah the solid Dana 50 is alot better than the old TTB setup that I got on my truck but since my truck is so old no point in swaping it out anyways good luck with the swap

Going forward, backward or leaving it in neutral is doing nothing. I can't turn it manually by hand either. The truck has around 180,000 miles on it and I never had a problem until now so I believe it is time to change the hubs.
