I have a 2017 Ford Explorer with a gentle 25K miles on it. My 3 year, 36K miles warranty is up in Feb 2020. What are your opinions on me purchasing an extended warranty?
If you get one, make sure to get a genuine Ford ESP (Extended Service Plan), not some third party warranty. I'd check with Zeigler Ford and Flood Ford before buying. They both sell tons of these service contracts and will beat your local dealer by at least a few hundred bucks.
As stated above, check with Zeigler, Flood, Anderson and Koch, Smith and Lombard Ford's. Some will give you an instant quote after you fill in some vehicle info. I can't remember which one of the dealers will email a quote. They all have similar pricing. The one that emails the quote will more than likely send you an additional quote a few days later with additional savings. Good luck

If I do it, it will be a FORD ESP from one of the above. Have some quotes from some of the above running about $1,600 with a $50 deductible and as low as $1,200 with a $200 deductible. I am leaning toward the $200 deductible.

Two repairs that can easily exceed that.
If you have the 3.5L engine, the dreaded internal water pump failure can be a $1500+ repair. I've seen up to $9k if the engine needs replacing due to spun bearings
EPAS steering rack is $2500.
One thing to check on the warranty. This came up on a forum recently with regards to the dreaded 3.5L water pump failure. It's internal, so when it goes is pukes coolant into the engine oil, and wipes the bearings if not caught in time. The warranty this person had ONLY covered the water pump and R&R. It did not cover the fact that the engine was toasted from the water pump failing. Not sure how that case was resolved, but it seemed to be a needless headache.
I went ahead and did it. Bought it from Anderson Koch. 8 years 75K miles, $100 deductible. Got to understand, the 8 Year includes your first 3 years under Ford (their standard warranty period) so basically they are extending the warranty for 5 years more. The 75K is total mileage.
I looked at a '19 Explorer over the weekend. I'll likely go for the extended warranty as well given my concerns a few posts ago. Haven't decided yet.

You will have 3 years and 36K miles for Ford (that was what it was). Do not buy a warranty from the dealer unless the same price as some of the online Ford Warranty Sellers. If you do not want to spend the money now, wait for the 3 year/36K to be close to ending, then buy for an online seller. There are 304 big sellers but Anderson Koch was the lowest reseller.
My Explorer is 2017 XLT (bought new) with 27K miles. I love it. Had one freaky thing happen. Had it to the dealer at 20K for oil/filter change. They noticed I had a battery acid leak and a corroded battery cable. They showed it to me. Not a question nor a peep from them. Repaired at no cost and when I went to pick it up, they showed me the repair (replacement of both actually).
Ended up crossing the Explorer off my list. I looked at a few, liked them, but my concerns about the 3.5L internal water pump issue still remains. I tend to drive my cars to 150-175K miles. I couldn't get a clear answer in writing that the extended warranty would cover a new engine if a water pump failure wiped the bearings. I don't want a 2020 explorer, so it seems the only way to get one is with the 3.5L in the older models.
My current Ford has the 3.5L and 110K miles. Just got a quote to proactively replace the pump for almost $2K.
