The success of the Escape is an economical, easy to park reasonably priced SUV that still looks like it's truck-based, despite front wheel drive. The others all look alike, and seem more like European station wagons than SUVs.
Ford makes mistakes too, though, I can't believe what they have done to the Explorer, Bleeeahhh!
This was announced by Ford on June 23, 2010, it was announced that Ford will end production on the second generation Escape in 2011 and move production to its Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, where it is slated to be succeeded by an American version of its European CUV counterpart, the Ford Kuga.
So what is it going to be Kuga or Vertrek or both?

According to the C&D article,
"The two small SUVs—one sold in North America and the other in Europe—will soon unite as one product based on the company’s C platform, which underpins the 2012 Focus and C-Max."
And it's moving to the Louisville Assembly Plant or LAP, former home of the Explorer, not the KTP. There are 2 Ford factories here.
I have to agree that the 2011 Ford Explorer has a case of the uglies. The front is equally ugly as the back of the SUV. If that is the new Escape then I guess in a few years I will be buying a used 2011. I have a 2001 Escape with 80k miles and it is an excellent truck. It is great on gas, plows through 2 feet of snow with no problems, and is extremely comfortable. I have had plenty of cars and SUVS in the past and I have to say that my Escape is in the top two of my favorites. The other was my wifes 2006 Kia Sportage. The bad thing about the sportage was the Gas mileage.
Bought a fwd hybrid Escape 2 yrs. ago, built < 20 miles from my home, and have been most pleased overall. It is averaging 34 mpg city and highway combined. Not much in the "get up and go" department but it does well enough for my purpose of just around town and extra-long highway trips.
I keep a larger 4wd vehicle when I need more room and power. This little hybrid beates it by 20 mpg. To me, that difference is worth it and the larger 4wd is nearly 10 yrs. old with over 200K miles on it. I do not think it was a bad purchase despite the projected payback period. I plan to sell it before plug-ins become common and before the batteries have too many years on them anyway.
