Offshoot of the fav cookies thread...thinking cake only, regardless of frosting (yeah I know that can make a diff but it's too many combos to put here)
Last year for my birthday my mother asked me what kind of cake I wanted.. (She hadnt asked in along time) and I said PLAIN WITH CHOCOLATE FROSTING.. (Only Kind I like) -- I ate 4 or 5 pieces
True. To get true white cake, you need to leave out the yolks. Yellow cake (which I take is the same as the vanilla/butter cake in your poll listings) is my favorite, too, and I like it all kinds of ways. With chocolate ganache, or fruit and whipped cream, or fruit and lemon curd, or chocolate whipped cream. Or just plain, really. I'm much more a cake person than a frosting person. I make the 1-2-3-4 cake that's in Alice Waters' The Art of Simple Food. It works almost as well when I don't separate the eggs, which can be time consuming and messy.
Pound cake: versatile, with berries or ice cream; good toasted even for breakfast.
