Maybe you all knew, but I just found out this weekend that the Fine Living Network will be called The Cooking Channel next year.
Makes sense. Not a whole lot of conspicuous consumption going on, right now. But what the heck is going on over at Food TV?
And here I was thinking that Emerill was demoted when he just may be back with a vengeance. We are having a blast with our "Which TV Chef would you Slap" thread but it is becoming quite obvious that The Food Network is rapidly becoming "The Entertainment Channel" with food as an afterthought. Well, apparently that is a conscious decision.
Scripps is toeing a fine line of differentiation with Food: a 24-hour network that "caters to avid food lovers by focusing on food information and instructional cooking programming," as opposed to "general entertainment fans…for food lovers" with Food Network. The analogy they are giving: HGTV and how that interplays with DIY Network.

It's so true that FoodNetwork is no longer the Food Network we all were attracted to. I'm not a fan of all these food challenges they have now. Have they gone the "reality TV" route?
It's because we don't like the judges. (Another slap for Alex, please)
I do enjoy Iron Chef but some of the other challenges are just too lame. In particular, the cake and candy challenges when they have to build these skyscraper productions (it's more an art competition than a food competition) and then carry them from one table to another.
Give us more shows like Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and some of the older shows where it was about the food, and I'll be happier with Food Network. Remember "Best Of"? I loved that show. Maybe I was the only one? Even "Ready-Set-Cook" was somewhat enjoyable. And "How to Boil Water" was pretty funny when it was Sean Donnellean doing the cooking.
And stop this "Next Food Network Star" charade. With the exception of Fieri, every other winner disappeared. The most recent winner, Melissa, was given two shows (on Sunday at 12:30 PM when no one is watching) and then vanished! They can't ALL be in the witness protection program! Why bother looking for the next star when you don't give them a chance to build an audience and a following? Maybe management needs a slap too? Where is Fogelson? Where is Tushman? Slap! Slap!

I loved "Best Of" and I agree but that one guy did make it-can't think of his name (year before Melissa). In a way Melissa was what the shows used to be.

Well, Martha Stewart owns all of the rights to his products and shows, but they didn't boot him off of Food TV because of that.
It's kind of like Michael Jackson owning all the rights to The Beatles music catalog.
