MILWAUKEE - Goodbye gherkin, hello tomato. After more than 110 years, H.J. Heinz Co. is giving the tomato top billing on its namesake ketchup and bumping the pickle from the label of one of America's most iconic brands.
I guess it would be too difficult to create the correct symbol for their ketchup - high fructose corn syrup doesn't photograph well. Was it Barbara Bush who thought ketchup should be considered a vegetable on school lunches?
am I the only one who NEVER noticed the pickle on the front in the first place??? granted, I stopped buying Heinz and other name brand ketchup years ago. I used to just buy the cheapie brands from the dollar store, but those have HFCS, so I stopped doing that. the 365 brand ketchup is a pretty good bargain for organic ketchup, esp. if can snag a coupon (Whole Foods had coupons for various condiments over the summer)
I am loyal to Heinz all the way. I'll miss the pickle picture even though I've never actually tasted a heinz brand pickle - I just like pickles.
I try to avoid high-fructose corn syrup wherever possible, but I am willing to make a few sacrifices, and this is one of them.
