Anyone know if freezing cream cheese works well?

A local grocery store has a screaming bargain on cream cheese for the holidays. I'm wondering if I can load up and freeze some for later.

(Going to have a nice big cheese cake for Christmas!!!)

I don't know if I would. It would seem like the freezing of it would/ could change the texture/ taste of it. And the fact that I have never heard of it makes me think that I wouldn't do it. There could be things inside it that change when you freeze it. That's just my guess though. I could be dead wrong.

I just did some reading on it and the consensus seems to be "no, the texture changes -- runny and grainy" but it depends on what you're going to use it for after you've defrosted it.

You can but the consistency changes and gets cumbly at room temp after its thawed. But if you use it for warm dishes/dips/recipes etc not a problem just as creamy as if it hadn't been frozen. We just heat it in the micro for a couple of seconds to warm it then it gets creamy again.

I have a block in the freezer right now that gonna be made into a dip for New Years.

Check the sell by date. You can probably stock up even if you don't freeze it.

I knew someone who used to freeze it (prob still does) and it did really funky things to it. I don't know if it was the brand used or what, but the few times I had it after freezing were not delicious.

why dont you do use a favor and do the experiment for us all? id be interested in seeing what exactly happens to cream cheese, although its not on sale near me.

i would suggest keeping it airtight, and from freezer burn. otherwise it would either lose the water in it or accumulate more once thawed. it might also depend on how you thaw it, i would suggest taking it from the freezer and placing it straight into the frig. so it thaws slowly, instead of a rapid heat transfer.

let us know

I've frozen cream cheese it gets grainy & running when thawed like others have said. If you are going to use it in a cooked dish it is OK but I don't like it in dips & cheeseballs. Depends on the mood I'm in (awake enough)if I like frozen cream cheese on a bagel.

My suggestion: no, it becomes crumbly. I have tried it, not worth the money you will save, but it does last, in the fridge for a heck of a long time. I think I would go that route. Of course, I am answering long after the fact.

I've kept sale cream cheese in the original unopened container for weeks past the use by date with no ill effects at all. It's when it is opened that it gets moldy after awhile.
Or use your sale cream cheese in baked goods and then freeze the baked goods. That works very well.
