During Lent, many of the faithful commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxury as a form of penitence. What are you giving up for Lent?

Last year I gave up caffeine because I never want to be unnecessarily dependent on a chemical to function. This year I may give up shopping for myself. I've fallen too into the habit of shopping bored and aimless and end up with things I don't need.

But maybe I won't. I'm not catholic, I'm not even a christian.

My denomination does not follow the giving up of anything for Lent, but my SO and I typically do meatless Fridays by choice.

I am not technically giving anything up for Lent because I'm not Christian, but I am switching to a meatless diet for the duration to show solidarity with my family and other folks around me that are taking part.

That being said, I haven't heard too many specific food-related swear-offs (?) besides one lady that said "she is going to eat less during Lent". I am thinking that is going to be a tough one to stick to because of its vagueness.

I think a good one for a lot of people would be not drinking soda or not smoking. Or no fast food.

I would say no coffee, but that's just crazy.

not giving up a single food, but I have given up so much wine, one glass a night only. That is better than about 3 plus I am trying not to use that 4 letter word that starts with "S" and ends in T. If I can do both I should qualify for sainthood.

Our denomination doesn't necessarily ask us to give up something, but many people do. I personally do not. My son gave up sodas for lent his sophomore year of high school. It stuck. He is now a senior in college and has just in last few months started to occasionally drink them again.

Cold and flu season made for an unplanned fast! Still, I don't overindulge in anything so I'm generally unrepentent in my diet. I did want to do a cleanse anyway heading into Spring.
