Now that peanut butter prices have risen considerably, what are some good high protein substitutes for it? Would having a slice of homemade 100% whole wheat bread or a glass of 2% milk and soy protein powder be a cost effective and healthy substitute for peanut butter and crackers?

Yuck. I would rather just eat plain toast. Good thing I stocked up the other day. I was going to suggest almond butter or Nutella as a substitute. But almond butter is not cheap.

If people stop buying it the price will come down. In the meantime try one of the other alternatives. Almond Butter is delicious and believe it or not so is Sunflower Seed Butter. Both are less fattening than commercial Peanut Butter and Sunflower Seed Butter has more nutrients. I buy the Maranatha Sunflower Seed Butter at a regular grocery store but depending upon where you live you might need to go to a health food store. It runs 5.89 for a 12 oz jar here.

If you're absolutely stuck on Peanut Butter go the healthy route and grind your own at home. You can buy bulk unsalted peanuts and use a food processor. Also some stores have their own machines. It's about $3-$4 for 8 ounces.

Peanut butter is good for your heart--all of the nuts are. It's worth eating good foods long-term even if you have to pay a bit more.

Try PB2, a powdered peanut butter. Sold on Amazon. Simply add water to get the texture you want. Cheaper than buying bottled peanut butter (although I assume the price of it will go up like the others).

Leftover roast chicken can make some good sandwiches.

Black beans rolled in a toasted pita.

Peanut butter has gone up but it's still pretty inexpensive given all of the meals you can get out of one jar...

I'm still buying the peanut butter. It's worth it. I got me a 16.3 ounce jar of Skippy extra-crunchy yesterday at Publix for $1.99.

I make an excellent Ramen with Thai peanut sauce. Add any veggies or meat, or just eat it that way. Ramen and peanut butter! I guess you know I don't spend much on groceries.

At my local stores, almond butter and sunflower seed butter are both TONS more expensive than peanut butter (and peanut butter is available in house brand, whereas the other two are not). But peanut butter has assuredly gone up. I don't eat it much, but I always kept a large jar of the house brand around to put in my dog's Kong to occupy him while he's crated, and I've had to cut that out of the budget, much to his sadness. But I can't justify spending that much on a doggy pacifier.

At any rate, where I am, even though peanut butter has gone up in cost, it's still cheaper than the alternative products. By far.
