My Mom is coming to visit and she likes wine. We are having steak and shrimp for dinner when she comes. What is the best wine to get with that dinner? I am not sure. Thanks. Kim

Can't hurt to ask your mom what varietals she likes. There are a lot of good varietals that go well with Steak - Cabs, Pinot Noir, etc.

With a surf and turf dinner, it can go either way, depending on what you like.
Me, I'd go with a Chardonnay.
But my husband prefers red wine, in which case, with steak and shrimp, I might choose a Zinfandel or Pinot Noir.
OR
You could buy a half-bottle of each.

Why not suggest to her that she bring a good wine for that meal, that kind of gets you off the hook and she can show off her wine knowledge !

That's a good idea!!!

Although, simple steaks are highly suited for showing off your finest red wines - red Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and blends made from both.

I'd go for a nice Pinot Noir, try Fess Parker and/or their Syrah. Both are perfect for steak. Their Pinot I believe is an allocated wine, so you might have trouble finding it, but their Syrah is not. Both scored above 90 in the Wine Spectator if I remember correctly, and yes I've tried them both, excellent!

Surf & turf? Split the difference and get a Zinfandel.

(Just kidding.)

(Sort of.)
