I have the copy from last yrs rankings. It is really interesting how they rate cities & the info they give on the cities. A good read overall & the authors point out several times that their book is a guideline to the statistics & critieria THEY use. But, they give REALLY good info. The website is cool b/c you can compare cities & the income you would need.

They cover most everything even the elevation if you need to know. It seems to be more up to date then some others. You have to use more then one resource to get a more complete over view. For example I like the way City-Data shows mileage to other close cities.

a good ranking is the kiss of death for the city as everyone then redirects there utopia pipe dreams towards that area and invades it. i remember ft lauderdale was like the #3 place to live back in the 90s one yr....now its mostly like living in central america somewhere (minus a few really nice suburbs, relax people....) anyhow areas that have a great thing going need to keep it quiet before it gets destroyed by transplants seeking the perfect life.

Gainesville was ranked #1 in the mid 90's on Money Magazine's list of best places to live. It's still got a great quality of life. The University of Florida gives the city lots of things to do. Tons of art performances, lectures, top ranked sports like the gators national championship basketball and football. Top ranked hospital in Shands.

Outstanding location for day trips. It's close by to lots of beautiful state parks and springs. 90 minutes to the Atlantic or Gulf. A couple hour drive to 3big major metros...Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa.

The major downside to living here is finding a good job. The market is saturated with highly skilled UF grads willing to work for peanuts to gain experience. But if you can find a good job here working at the University or one of the hospitals or government offices in town, you will have an excellent lifestyle.

It's also fast becoming a destination for retirees who want to retire somewhere with lots of things to do and where they aren't surrounded by tons and tons of other old people.

Which is exactly why I didn't post a link to the article first thing this morning. Fortunately, Gainesville is not like most of Florida and that will hopefully keep the hordes away. Shoo.
