Come on guys, Mississippi over Florida for a family? Missouri will probably (but maybe not) have better schools and generally is safer. Mississippi and Louisiana are almost guaranteed to be worse in everything except for traffic and cost of living. Even the weather will be worse, considering they get all of the extremes of a Florida summer, including hurricanes, but not quite as nice of a winter. I would rank it like this

1. Missorui
2. Florida
3. Louisiana
4. Mississippi
I would not recommend any of these places like AZ, NM, etc. but they said they want to stay where it is warm. That rules out most places north of Florida except for the Sunbelt out west. Missouri is not a nice place to live and crime is very bad there especially in St. Louis. LA or MS....yuck.

Thanks for all the feedback!! Trying to find a low crime, family friendly area in the warmth is hard to find?? Does anyone know anything about Springfield MO? I know its not warm all the time but Iam sure it beats Michigan.. I just love all your opinions it really helps us out. Obviously not too many of you like LA or MS so keep the opinions coming!! Is there any Police officers out there??

Being a police officer in Florida isn't as safe as it is in other places and you have to go through TONS of redtape and paperwork with the FDLE to come into the state as a LEO and if you DID go to the academy somewhere else, Florida makes you go through theres anyway.
You've got to be kidding!! You'd rank Louisiana above Florida as safer? Have you listened to anything about New Orleans?

I lived in NOLA with my wife for a year, Crime is bad there but just like everywhere else, 95% of the crime happened in certain parts of the city and were drug related.

FYI, Louisiana is a big state, New Orleans is one part, Shreveport is several hours away, as is Lafayette and Monroe. Not to mention Baton Rouge which is a cool town.

Saying Louisiana is bad because of New Orleans is like saying Florida is bad because of Miami.

Missouri's not so bad.

St. Louis has it's bad sides but most of St. Louis worst neighborhoods are across the river in Illinois. Again, saying Missouri is bad because of St. Louis is wrong as they also have Kansas City, Branson, Jefferson City, Springfield, ect, ect...

To the O.P. I'm headed to Texas as soon as I can. If you want a high quality of life and also be able to afford things and live in what is basically a " mcmansion " for a VERY low price, Look to moving to Texas...

Apparently you didn't hear about KCMO schools loosing their accreditation. I know you have no idea about their inability to repair roads, or clear for snow. their taxes are very high, they have state income tax as well as personal property tax on cars trailers, boats and rvs. The city also has a 1% income tax. I have no idea where you got this ranking but I seriously doubt it is based on experience.

btw Mississippi has the lowest life expectancy inn the US and with LA they have the weakest schools... hard to imagine much worse than MO but in fact...

I would say FL is the best choice by far of the bunch

I agree that Mississippi and Louisiana have pretty bad public school systems. Those states would be very low on my list if I were searching for a family friendly place to live. Alabama might be ok. There are some decent areas there. I would much rather try AL than MS or LA.

Weather should not be a factor in this economy. Go where the highest paying jobs are.

SC has high crime due to a select few cities that bring the entire state. Mrytle Beach (party place, transients, visitors all year round), Florence is terrible (high poverty rating), etc... I wouldnt live in those towns btw. So I would put FL above SC, although the upstate SC (Greenville) is very, very nice and one of the best places to live in America, always ranked highly.

I wouldnt live in Missouri, Louisiana, or Mississippi. Sorry, not much help, but I wanted to give you some thoughts. Someone mentioned NC and also Georgia and Texas. Those states I would definitely recommend checking out.
