Probably the Keys in general would make more sense.

Okay my family and I have always dreamed of living in the fl keys, Marathon in paticular. My husband is a teacher is it realistic to think we could afford to live there? We do have 3 younger children. Any input would be great.

Have heard there is a building freeze in the Keys. If a home is destroyed by weather it cannot be rebuilt. any truth to that ?

It depends on many things. On a single teachers salary probably not, but it depends on how much income your household will be making and how frugal you are. Anything under 60k probably not a good decision for a family of 5. You need to crunch the numbers. Not sure where you are coming from, but insurance (flood and wind), car insurance, taxes, etc are high in Florida. The Keys are not cheap like they were 30 years ago. And homes are not cheap in the keys, trailer homes on canals are in the $400,000+ range. Crazy I know.
