We have purchased a home and will be spending half the year in Florida. We live the rest of the year in Oregon where we have NO sales tax. We will need a vehicle in Florida and planned to purchase a car here in Oregon and ship it to Florida, which we found would be cheaper than buying the car in Florida and pay the 6% sales tax.

Today we were told that when we try to register the car in Florida and it was purchased less than 6 months ago, they would charge us the sales tax anyway even thought it wasn't purchased in Florida. Is that really true?

If we register it in Oregon, then we would have to pay for the registration and the licensing in both states.

Thanks in advance for your input into this delimah.

Probably true, so the state can avoid the very scenario you are describing. Why register in Florida at all, if you are only a snowbird? Unless you mean you plan to keep the car in Florida full time.

We had wanted to Homestead our home and understood that our vehicle needed to be registered in Florida in order to qualify. Is that correct?

That is absolutely true. Look into this website, it's all there. I read that on the website that if it's within 6 months you pay tax here too, and that is rediculous.

This has to be your home. Car registration is one indicator. In other words, you will need to register to vote here, get DL's here.. If you are paying income taxes and another state shows as your home, then you can't homestead here.
