I don't know about for a young family. I'm sure both cities have their good places to live. But my perspective on the Orlando vs Tampa.

Tampa has the beaches near by and is a larger metro. It will have plenty to do, more options for neighborhoods and naturally more jobs. Three pro teams

But if someone told me I had to live in one of the two I think I would pick Orlando. It has an NBA team which is fairly important to me deciding if a city is a good place to live it also has tons of entertainment. Yes a lot of it is meant for tourist but still. It has a decent downtown for a city it's size in the south and a larger better connected airport. For some reason Orlando appeals to me more.

Really I think that unless the water is important to you where ever the better job is, is where the family should move when picking between the two.

I would say Tampa, because of slightly nicer weather and closer to beaches. More to do as well.

I agree, milder weather typically...especially within a few miles of the coast. The beaches are far nicer as well and there's a more well-rounded list of things to do that are not centered on tourism.

I grew up in Central FL and was raised mostly in the Orlando area. I now live in the Tampa Bay area. Orlando is fun for families with younger children but expensive because it is tourist haven. Teenagers will say it is a boring place to live with nothing to do because most of the entertainment there is geared towards either young families or the college crowd, or Disney fanatics. If your family loves the outdoors then Orlando has Tampa Bay beat, with Orlando's abundance of parks and natural exhibits outdoors (natural springs, camping, etc). Tampa Bay is safer than Orlando, but not by a landslide. More options in Tampa Bay in terms of cultural exhibits, and the beaches here are gorgeous. The quality of education will be similar in both areas, but not great by any means.
