Hi everyone,

I was offered a job in Hamilton County. I'd be relocating from Long Island, NY. I know the area is extremely rural (especially compared to busy suburbia LI). There are no jobs where I live now and wanted to go to FL. I do love the beach and know I'd be away from it living in Hamilton. Is it worth maybe moving to Lake City so I'd be closer to Jacksonville yet still commutable to Hamilton?

What is it like living in Hamilton, what is there to do? I want to get back into horseback riding, so I do think that's a plus to living in a rural area.

Thoughts?

You might also consider Valdosta, Georgia which has an equal commute to Lake City. It's much larger and has a whole lot more to do being the commercial center of extreme South-Central Georgia. Living day to day would be a lot more pleasurable there and it's a two drive to Jacksonville Beach on the weekends which isn't too bad.

The Suwannee River valley is a beautiful area, the most beautiful part of the state in my opinion.

You may be shocked by the poverty that you see. Poverty in LI vs poverty in the Deep South are two very different things.

If you genuinely like the rural lifestyle, you may be happy in Hamilton County, but if you are not used to it, you may go crazy. You might consider renting a place in Valdosta, GA or Live Oak at first to get a better feel of the area.

Hamilton County is about as country and backwoods as you can get in Florida, so you are sure in for a change from Long Island.

I've lived in Hamilton County, and I genuinely like the rural lifestyle.......it was too country and backwoods for me
Valdosta or Lake City would be decent places to live, and decent commutes to Hamilton County.
I'm not a big fan of Live Oak.

Welcome to the south! Hamilton County is surely the south. If living in Georgia isn't a problem then go with Valdosta, but if you'd rather live in Florida, then Lake City is the place to be. They both are relatively close to Hamilton County depending on the portion of the county you work in. If you plan on regular visits to Jacksonville, then lake city would be a better option. I will warn you like other people have it is countyyyy so be prepared. I personally love North Florida it is home to me,and ill most likely relocate back when I am ready to settle settle down. Good Luck!!!

Don't forget that Georgia has a state income tax and Florida doesn't. Robyn

Do you have to pay it if you live in Georgia but work in Florida?

Thank you guys for all of the replies. People are scaring me with saying how country it is. I'm from up north lol so can anyone give me examples on what is "very country." And also, as a single girl living by herself, will I be safe?

And also, any good towns toward the Tallahassee (sorry if the spelling is butchered) side that are commutable to Hamilton County?

Thank you everyone for all the feedback.
