Lots of old people in Arizona and the Southwest. Shouldn't they be full of quacks and frauds? I'm thinking it is more than a supply problem. People who want to commit fraud are drawn by something in Florida. I saw on a history show how the railroad to Key West was hardly built when the fraudulent realty industry started up.

Did a bit of web exploration, found this in Wikipedia: Florida land boom of the 1920s - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Basically says fraud is as old as development in Florida. Last big scamfest ended in 1925, 88 years ago. I'm sure that left a lot of cultural memory.

Also looks like I answered my own Arizona question: http://phoenix.about.com/od/scam1/Scams_and_Frauds.htm

Most of the people who live in FL were not born here, and the vast majority of those who moved here were under the impression that the grass would be much greener.

People who fall for "the grass is greener" sh*t more often than not, myself included, are far more gullible and trustworthy of strangers and outsiders, and all of us are strangers to each other down here in FL because so few of us were actually born and raised here due to the state's highly transient population. People who moved to FL fell hard for the impression that life would be much better here than from where they originated, or as one previous poster on this thread put it: "Mayberry with better weather."

If the people in FL fell for that, which they did at one point or another because now they're living down here, who's to say that they won't fall victim rather easily for some other type of fraudulent scheme?

I remember my great-aunt from RI telling me a story a number of years ago that she was briefly employed as a realtor at a firm in RI and her position entailed her to sell vacant lots/parcels of land to those wishing to purchase property in FL. Well, she had no idea that she was selling undrained swampland to these unsuspecting folks because she had neither seen the parcels of land she was selling nor had ever been to FL herself. Eventually, the buyers figured out they were being scammed and they reported the real estate office to the Better Business Bureau. The office was forced to shut down, and my aunt lost her job. This was taking place in the 1950's and 60's and was commonplace during that time period, so folks in FL/moving to FL have been subjected to fraudulent scams and behavior for decades now.

Selling undrained swampland in FL to unsuspecting northerners was once a thriving industry. That is, perhaps, one of the most well-known FL scams in history.
