Id prefer Ocala. Gainsville is pretty expensive and its a college city. Ocala is laid back and houses are about $110 a square foot. Medium expensive. If you want really nice houses with vintage charm, look into states like West Virginia

Default Ocala/Gainesville

I've lived in the Gainesville area for decades. Here's my unput:
Gainesville is more expensive that Ocala. Housing prices are exhorbitant, and property taxes are OUTRAGEOUS. Housing should be cheaper in Marion County (Ocala), and I'm sure taxes are, too.
A news segment last night showed that the price of gasoline in the Ocala area was about 20 cents per gallon cheaper than the Gainesville area.
There seems to be more sprawl in Ocala, and it's turning into a large retirement area. You may be able to find land in the "country", but it won't be country for too much longer. The entire Alachua/Marion Counties area is rapidly developing, as land is being eaten up in South Florida.
When watching the local news, there seems to be more crime in the Ocala area than Gainesville.
As for seasons....winter is pleasant, running from early November through mid/March, if we're lucky. Spring is nice, very colorful, but frequently dry---annoying if you're trying to set out a garden. It can really start to heat up as early as mid-April, and the drought will continue into early June. The heat is brutal from mid-May through most of September. No seabreezes here. Fall is kind of starting now (late September), with alternating warm and slightly cooler days and nights.

Yes, type Ocala in the search box...though, you'll find I'm one that has written from only one visit there back in May, I don't know inside things Maybe, one day somebody will write more detailed things.
However, I do recall some developer was trying to preserve the "old world charm" & charming homes were being built in the historic neighborhood. Basically to add to the surrounding charm of an era gone by.
For the life of me, I can't remember the name. I don't know if it's a safe place, nor any details about the downtown area.

I was born and raised in the USA. I have no comment on the person above..Im zipping my mouth, for I would get kicked off this site if I started, if you know what I mean..lol..

Anyhow.Thank you for the comments. But like one person said, if anyone has more detail about these areas.

Do they have fall? Do leaves fall off the trees?

How cold does it get, and does it warm up durning the day?

How are the people?

Etc
