I think Venice on the west coast and the St Augustine area on the east coast are cheap right now, and safe.

Venice is rather cheap and safe. If you want a little more life Sarasota is nicer..

Most of the panhandle (Pensacola area ) is cheap and safe.

Much of north Florida is cheap and safe. Not overcrowded either

I would add Palm Coast and parts of Brevard County (check out Merritt Island).

The Panhndle can get surprisingly expensive in spots. Our ordinary 1700sf ranch in a good and safe but not luxury area would cost you more than twice as much as something similar in Ft. Myers or Punta Gorda would.

It should be "The least worst places to live on both coasts, least worthless real estate, and least crime-ridden".

I suppose you think you're being cute but those parameters apply to wherever one chooses to relocate, even your little slice of heaven.

Cape Coral, hands down. Some of the most inexpensive homes in the country, although that's changing. And...it has the second lowest crime rate per capita in Florida. Nice, too. Lot of new faces, friendly people. Now if you need a job that is another story. High unemployment rate like most of the state. But fabulous for retirees, second-home buyers, those not in need of a job. It is one of the few places in the country that is seeing home prices rise.

Exclamation Claim Backup?

I'm not seeing much backup to support recommended areas as "safe" in posts.

I'm amazed with how people confuse how "nice" a neighborhood or area may appear to be or a "nice" small town or a rural area that's somehow "safe." But is it?

And a non-descript, blighted or minority area must be "unsafe." But is it?

Making such assumptions in FL will make you a fool!

Use the following tool for local Crime Reports to map crime (and types of crimes) in an area. Look up your neighborhood first, then compare it to areas you are finding for real estate searches to see if you have a good fit:
http://www.crimereports.com/

The other thing that's strange in FL is that you can go from a great area to a very bad one in just a few blocks (and not be able to tell just by looking at it).

You'd be amazed of what the facts show, instead of basing such things on just appearances!

That will be great news for all those looking for cheap safe places to escape the winter. Alf do you live in either of these areas? or are you just trying to get the influx of weather weenies to move to somewhere else other than where you're at ..
