I am from Buffalo, NY and I am looking to move to either Gainesville or Jacksonville. How bad is the crime in Gainesville? Where are the high crime neighborhoods located? From the little bit I've read on these forums it sounds like its best to stay away from the east side. But what about the west side?

The East side of Gainesville is high crime. The west and NW usually have the lowest crime rates.

I am curious as to why you are choosing Gainesville. It would not be one of my choices unless I was a student going to UF, a doctor or nurse at Shands, or I was teacing at UF. The few times I have been there, my take on the town was there is not a lot there except for the college and it is a drive to anywhere else.

Gainesville has few decent paying jobs the east side has low income rougher areas but its fairly contained in those pockets Jacksonville is one of the most dangerous cities in Florida if not the worst for violent crimes.
