I am from Buffalo, NY and I am looking to move to either Gainesville or Jacksonville. How bad is the crime in Gainesville? Where are the high crime neighborhoods located? From the little bit I've read on these forums it sounds like its best to stay away from the east side. But what about the west side?

How bad is the crime in Jacksonville? Where are the high crime neighborhoods located? From the little bit I've read/heard, it sounds like its best to stay away from the North side. But what about the rest of the Jacksonville?

The East side of Gainesville is high crime. The west and NW usually have the lowest crime rates.

Some bedroom communities outside of G ville are low crime, although the best situation imo is to have some acreage where your home is not visible from the highway in the country. The best areas are around the towns of Alachua, Newberry, High Springs, Micanopy. Keystone Heights half way between Jax and Gville is low crime but the commute is long to either city.

The south side of Jax and adjacent counties are usually lower crime than the urban areas. St Johns county, Mandarin are better areas too.

A key factor is the demographics of the area. It is not considered "politically correct" to say more.

By all means rent to start.

Gainesville is a town full of young people and the University offers a lot of spinoffs that gives the town more cosmopolitan benefits than most small towns its size. Jax may offer more job opportunities.

There are probably web sites that specialize in crime maps so do some research.

Good luck.

I am curious as to why you are choosing Gainesville. It would not be one of my choices unless I was a student going to UF, a doctor or nurse at Shands, or I was teacing at UF. The few times I have been there, my take on the town was there is not a lot there except for the college and it is a drive to anywhere else.

I work in healthcare, and I wouldn't mind teaching at UF

Gainesville is a great place for students and families. You get one of the highest educated populations in Florida due to UF/healthcare.

Gainesville has few decent paying jobs the east side has low income rougher areas but its fairly contained in those pockets Jacksonville is one of the most dangerous cities in Florida if not the worst for violent crimes.
