We are wanting to move to Florida, most likely-Sarasota. Our 4 year old son has autism. Does anyone know how good Florida's services are? Any schools to recommend? We heard about a public school called Oak Park but don't know anything about it. Any help would be appreciated!

dayners I can't comment on Sarasota per se but I am a uncle of a Autistic child who has been through the Miami Dade public school system (they are excellent) to Orlando which is very good as well.I wouldn't worry too much about about it here in Florida regarding services.

I don't know about Sarasota, either, but Pinellas has been excellent for our Autistic son. If I had known how good it would be for him here, we would have moved long before we did.

My step sister lives in Pinellas and I cannot believe the services she gets for her son.

My daughter, who is visually impaired and autistic, has received superior services here in Orlando. I am in awe of what is done for her. My son also benefits from Florida's McKay Scholarship. My son is not autistic, but has other issues, and we used the McKay Scholarship and the ability to choose schools granted by Florida to put him in the best environment.

The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities has a big program at UCF, and they may be able to point you to some assistance in the Sarasota area.

Also, in your area there are some big autism support groups.

Take a look at the Emerald Coast Autism Center.

My wife works as a teacher aide in McNeal Elementary in Lakewood Ranch. A few years ago she was a one-on-one aide with a kindergarten student with autism. Last year she was in a VE class with a child who was unable to speak or learn in the normal sense but she felt they were able to have some success with him. Of course, there's a wide range of characteristics and abilities among children with autism but I thought it was interesting that the school system was able to give that kind of attention to an individual child with those kinds of needs. Also, for what it is worth, there is a private school in Lakewood Ranch for autistic children. It is called Pinnacle.

Ugghhh...just noticed this was an old thread that was resurrected...
