I've been out to Sedona numerous times and plan on retiring in or near Sedona. We are primarily looking for acreage, and within Sedona it's not looking too promising in our price range. I saw a listing for a 2 acre property in Cornville on Zillow today that was quite affordable, but the surrounding area looked reminiscent of "The Hills Have Eyes". How is Cornville? I am heading back out that way in July this year, so I will check it out myself, but is it even worthwhile to do so, or is the place just a dustbowl? Shopping? Ease of access to shopping? Thanks..

John McCain and his wife have a place in Cornville, but the media (and others....) like to say it's in Sedona, so there's that!

acreage in Sedona will be pricey, as you already know...so you may have to live further out....get what you can afford and check on weird neighbors, zoning rules, nearby meth labs, soil conditions, drainage/flooding, taxes, community activities, etc....

the entire Verde Valley is not bad - a pretty mild place to live, but it will be warm in the summer and cool in the winter.....major shopping will be in Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Sedona.....you'll drive for everything, probably....no, not a dustbowl, but Arizona is dry and windy at times and dust will get on stuff inside....nice interstate access to Flag and Phx for even bigger shopping....casino if you're into that.....Verde River and other outdoor areas for recreation.....

Having driven through Cornville a gazillion times on my way to Cottonwood from Sedona, I must say it's a "up and coming" community

I hope you understand it is not a place that is going to commercially expand much because of its proximity, 5 minute drive, to Cottonwood where you would find the Big Box, and large grocery chains.

Cornville is the typical rural highway gas stop, corner grocery store, small enclaves of homes with additional ones spread throughout the area.

I could list exactly what is available but you get the message.

Try to remember it is a desert and all that entails.

If you could get property on the one and only flowing body of water, Oak Creek, in this desert, that would be great.

Thank you. I didn't mean anything negative by "dust bowl".LOL. I know what desert living is all about; I love it out there. I hadn't heard much about Cornville, but I did like the proximity to Cottonwood and Sedona, and I like the affordability of homes out there. I lived in So Cal for 2 years, and spent time in Lancaster and Victorville as well. Those are places I refer to as "dustbowls", because there is relatively little scenery to speak of, and the area holds no charm or interest for me. Sedona and the surrounding area, including Flagstaff, all really are what I am looking for. It's just a tough decision. I like to plan early, and I have about 7 years to go until I retire and plan to leave Florida. I want to get some ideas of places to look at when I head out there on my upcoming trip.
Again, I really appreciate everyone's input and time.

7 Years?

I'll be back in Sedona from NY in a few months.

Dust bowl it can be depending on the area.

Flagstaff is a different world from Cornville because of it altitude.

Icy cold, blizzards and lots of snow just like it is outside right now here in upstate NY.

Did you check out VOC, Village of Oak Creek area, 10 miles apart but USPS considers it Sedona.

I did check out VOC, which is the area I will most likely end up if I can't find the acreage we want. Always loved VOC. I found Sedona proper a little too congested and dense for my liking.

Too bad you aren't ready to make the move.

I have a fellow native NY'r friend who built a custom house in VOC about 6 years ago, that will be selling soon.

His wife longs for the wet, green hills back here so ....................................

I could go into the negatives about the Sedona area but the reaction would be swift and terrible towards me from the people that love their Red Rocks Country

Trust me, I'd leave tomorrow if I didn't have a long-term job here that I get retirement from. I have done a lot of research and heard all the negatives, as well as seen them. The availability of activities out there for me far outweigh the negatives.

I'm in Cornville, the 'Real Cornville",not the Verde Santa Fe community. I moved here about 3 years ago, got myself a nice house on just over an acre. I understand what you meant with the 'hills have eyes' comment. Some of the properties around here don't show pride of ownership, but.......the people are friendly, the area is quiet, wild animals visit the yards. Cottonwood is just over 15 min away, we do our grocery shopping, etc there. Anything else we need, Prescott and Flag are about an hour or so away and we can be in Phx in 90 minutes. As far as Cornville itself, there are very few businesses here. 2 Gas station/mini marts, Post Office, small hardware store (very well stocked too!) a couple of restaurants, etc.

We love it here.

Hey curly

I used the UHaul in Cornville when I moved back here to NY.

I hope it's still there for my return in a couple months.

Much easier and quicker from VOC than going into Sedona.

How are the massive commercial highway development like the Dollar Store doing
