I'm confused. Sedona is not that close to the canyon. Are you going to drive up there from Sedona, look around, and come back the same day, or???

Apparently you can get them at the Visitor Center at the park. No charge, but first come first serve. http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/thi.../park-service/

tidymaid12 - If you have a handicap placard (regardless of state), check at the park entrance to see if they can give you the code for the gate at Hermit Road. That area (west of the rim lodges) is normally closed to vehicular traffic, but they do allow backcountry hikers/campers with permits and visitors with handicaps to drive private vehicles along the road.

There's a four-digit code you'll need to enter at the keypad near the gate. If the entrance rangers don't know/have it, ask at the backcountry information center (or another park information center staffed by NPS rangers). It makes the visit a lot less stressful if you wish to tour that part of the rim (and it's a very pretty section, so I highly recommend it - probably my favorite section for watching the sun set).

That sounds like a great plan. How about route 66? You mentioned it, is it part of the historic rate 66? That would be very cool!

jmacie14: Route 66 is the main road through Flagstaff. Leaving Sedona, either via 89A or I-17, you'll almost have to go through Flagstaff to reach the Canyon (unless you feel like taking I-40 to Williams, and then going north). 89A or I-17 through Flagstaff will dump you onto Milton Rd. Go about 1.5 miles north, and continue straight. Route 66 joins Milton Rd at the Barnes and Noble Book Store. You'll see plenty of "Americana" even on a short drive through Flagstaff -- old motels, gas stations (though most of them have been converted into mechanics shops, you can still see their roots), historic downtown Flagstaff, the Amtrak station... So by virtue of driving from Sedona to the Grand Canyon, one could "check" Route 66 off their list.
